When can I put my Christmas tree up in India?

1 December is the accepted earliest date
Tree goes up
No single fixed date; preparations intensify through December with no universal “tree-up” day
Tree comes down
No strongly documented fixed take-down date; loosely follows the general Epiphany-season close where observed
Local superstition
No distinctive documented superstition.

Why that date

Christians are a small minority (roughly 2.3% of the population) so there is no nationwide civic custom dictating timing; celebrations are concentrated in Christian communities such as Goa, Kerala, Mizoram, and Nagaland, each with regional customs.

What actually happens

Genuinely distinctive: because pine and fir do not grow natively across most of India, many Christian households decorate mango or banana trees instead of, or alongside, a conventional Christmas tree, and hang elaborate handmade paper star lanterns — a substitution not seen in most of the countries surveyed.

Taking it down again

No strongly documented fixed take-down date; loosely follows the general Epiphany-season close where observed. No distinctive documented superstition.

If you would rather not have this argument again next year, the calendar reminder on the home page will put both dates straight into your phone.
