Why that date
The tree in Ukraine has historically been associated with New Year (Novy Rik) rather than Christmas specifically, a legacy of the Soviet era when religious Christmas was suppressed and the tree was rebranded as secular; this is shifting following Ukraine’s move away from the Julian calendar.
What actually happens
In July 2023, Ukraine’s parliament officially moved Christmas from 7 January (the Julian-calendar date long shared with Russia) to 25 December, with the first official 25 December Christmas celebrated in 2023 — an explicit political move, described by the Zelensky government, to break from Russian cultural heritage. Some Ukrainians still privately observe 7 January out of habit or family tradition.
