When can I put my Christmas tree up in the United Arab Emirates?

2 December is the accepted earliest date
Tree goes up
Widely anchored to UAE National Day (2 December) as an informal local marker, alongside transplanted home-country customs among the large expatriate community
Tree comes down
No nationwide fixed date; observed informally per each community’s home tradition, generally within the general 5/6 January Western window
Local superstition
No distinctive local superstition documented.

Why that date

As a majority-Muslim country where Christmas is not an official holiday, timing is driven almost entirely by the large Western, Filipino, and other expatriate Christian communities, each often keeping their home country’s custom (e.g. Italians on 8 December, Filipinos in September, Americans around Thanksgiving); UAE National Day on 2 December has emerged as a convenient shared local “starting gun”.

What actually happens

Genuinely distinctive: because there is no single dominant local custom, individual households in the UAE openly import and follow whichever tradition matches their home country, creating a uniquely varied “melting pot” of tree-up dates within the same city.

Taking it down again

No nationwide fixed date; observed informally per each community’s home tradition, generally within the general 5/6 January Western window. No distinctive local superstition documented.

If you would rather not have this argument again next year, the calendar reminder on the home page will put both dates straight into your phone.
